Embedded Linux Conference 2021

Embedded Linux Conference 2021 was held September 27th through the 30th. As a Seattle-based company, having ELC held in our own backyard was a real treat! Check out our recap to see what our team was up to throughout the course of the event.

Event Recap

We sent four PHYTEC-ers to represent us as sponsors of Embedded Linux Conference 2021 hosted in our hometown Seattle!  Embedded Linux Conference is the premier technical conference for companies and developers using Linux in embedded products and provides deep-dive learning opportunities. As a company with Arm-based embedded platforms, Linux is our standard software offering. We take pride in helping our customers navigate the open source community and successfully bring industrial embedded Linux projects to market. Even though the majority of sponsors were software service companies we didn’t let that dissuade us from taking the chance to mingle, learn, educate others on what we do, and support the Linux Foundation by setting up shop in partnership with software services company, Konsulko Group. We’re very excited about our partnership with Konsulko, who specifically helps us by providing embedded Linux support and development for our customers. In addition to announcing our partnership with Konsulko we showcased our core product offerings and provided an interactive demo that people loved. In case you missed it, here’s a breakdown of what we brought.

Connect-0100 Around the Globe

We highlighted our latest products like the phyCORE-AM64x, phyCORE-STM32MP15x, and phyCORE-i.MX 8M Mini, as well as our Connect-0100 machine learning demo, a robot-arm powered by our phyCORE-AM57x SOM that’s always a hit. This year we only had about 13 total people actually #beatthemachine, with many others ending in a draw (that’s a win in our book!). Simultaneously on the other side of the world people were playing Connect-0100 with our PHYTEC China team at IPC and Embedded Expo in Shenzhen!

Highlights

The best parts of the event were attending the keynote sessions AND the fun activities Linux Foundation planned throughout the week. One keynote in particular blew our socks off. We were lucky enough to see the creator of Linux himself, in the flesh, Linus Torvalds! Listening to him speak was a treat and that alone made being at the event worth it!

We also got to attend Tim Canham’s keynote speech, he is the Software and Operations Lead for the Mars Helicopter, which was a part of the Perseverance Rover project by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Did you know that the Mars Helicopter is the first technology demonstration testing powered, controlled flight on another planet!? What is amazing is how Tim’s team leveraged Linux and open source components to develop it. This keynote was an engineer’s delight which went into a high-level technical overview about the system architecture and design considerations.

We had a great time showing attendees and other sponsors alike that PHYTEC truly has a SOM for every project, and that PHYTEC fits within the Linux and open source community story, because our SOMs run on Linux and have been deployed in a wide range of applications and industries. Whether you utilize PHYTEC’s reference Yocto Project Linux Distribution, Android or other BSP, PHYTEC is working with Konsulko Group to offer services and tools to get your project development started.
