Silverlight for Windows® Embedded
Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 and Windows Embedded Compact 7 deliver the rich application experiences of Microsoft Silverlight, which provide seamless connections to Windows 7-based PCs, servers and online services and integrates multimedia, graphics, animations and interactivity into a single runtime environment.. Silverlight for Windows Embedded is a native (C++ based) User Interface (UI) development framework and is based on Microsoft Silverlight 2. Silverlight for Windows Embedded simplifies the design of rich and innovative UIs on Windows Embedded CE powered devices.
Silverlight UI application development requires no previous Windows UI based application development experience and the approach is very different from Win32 or MFC. UIs developed with Silverlight are completely custom and not identifiable as MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class), GTK+(object oriented widget toolkit), Qt (multiplatform C++ GUI toolkit), or any other leading UI framework.
The key advantage of Silverlight is the ability to separate the effort of the application program logic code development from the UI design (XAML file) (eXtensible Application Markup Language). At the start of a project, the designers and developers will create a “contract” defining the interface between the XAML file and the C++ code. Designers can start on UI prototyping without any dependence on developers. After the developers and the designers have agreed to the contract, the designers work with MS Expression Blend to develop the XAML while the developers work in Microsoft Visual Studio on the program logic code development. With this ability to work independently and in parallel, designers and developers can focus on their areas of expertise using only the tools with which they are most experienced and familiar. This greatly increases work efficiency, minimizes iterations, and allows for projects requiring a rich user interface to get to market in a very short time.
Another Silverlight advantage is the ease and flexibility of developing and offering multiple skins. A single Silverlight .exe can easily support a variety of skins. The UI resources do not have to reside within the application binary, but in a separate XAML file. The external XAML file allows ISVs to easily create a white labeled solution and afterward distribute the solution with a unique skin. Customers also have the ability to modify the skin without needing access to the program logic source code. Get started today and leverage Silverlight’s powerful advantage for delivering a state-of-the-art application experience, while having a simplified UI design process, and achieving significantly reduced development times.

Silverlight for Embedded Demo
This demonstration provides step-by-step instruction for using Silverlight for Windows Embedded to develop a fully functional Digital Compass. It will describe how a designer and a developer, using Silverlight, can go from a prototype UI design to a final working Silverlight for Windows Embedded UI project in very little time and without any previous GUI based application development experience.
