SOM Description
The phyCORE-MPC5200B-I/O is a System on Module populated with the high-performance, 32-bit RISC MPC5200B processor from Freescale that boasts an array of flexible features of use in a wide range of automotive and mediacentric vehicle applications. Features of the MPC5200B include: 760 MIPS of processing power, a double precision Floating Point Unit (FPU), integrated automotive networking (CAN, J1850), an MMU-based (Memory Management Unit) architecture with double data rate (DDR) memory support, integrated peripheral component interconnect (PCI), advanced technology attachment (ATA), universal serial bus (USB), multiple serial channels, up to three inter-IC sound (I²S) interfaces, and support for Ethernet. The MMU supports operating systems, enables virtual memory management and facilitates the conversion of virtual addresses into physical addresses during direct access of runtime memory or external circuitry. The FPU enables commands and calculations of floating point numbers. In the absence of an FPU, such operations would otherwise be carried out by a compiler in processor operation using whole numbers.
The on-board Altera Cyclone II EP2C8BGA256 in-system-programmable FPGA with 8000 logic cells is another primary feature of the SOM subassembly. This re-programmable FPGA reconfigures itself during run-time, according to user specifications based on device-level algorithms, and is able to achieve previously unattained processing speed and parallelism. The FPGA can independently processes massive amounts of parallel information at a lower clock speeds than the MPC5200B processor.
